Obsidian Entertainment, the makers behind Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds, Pentiment and many other well-regarded titles, has looked to Skyrim for inspiration with Avowed.

Set in the Living Lands, players will look to stop the spread of a mysterious plague and learn about their own personal connection to the world of Eora.

As an Xbox console exclusive, expectations are high for the Californian studio to deliver an experience that can compete with Sony's recent history of stellar triple-A games.

Of course, Microsoft has seen the likes of Starfield and Hi-Fi Rush launch over the past 12 months, but this is undoubtedly one of the big ones for 2024.

Ahead of Avowed's launch, here's everything you need to know about the new Obsidian action fantasy RPG, from release date window and trailers to pre-order news and gameplay.

Avowed release date speculation

Obsidian has confirmed that Avowed will be released sometime in autumn 2024.

This means that Avowed could be released anytime between September and November 2024, so it's certainly set to arrive at the tail end of the year.

We're likely to find out a more specific release date in the coming months.

Which consoles and platforms can play Avowed?

Avowed will be available to play on Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft Windows (PC).

As developer Obsidian Entertainment is owned by Microsoft, Avowed is an Xbox exclusive, and will not come to PlayStation or Nintendo consoles.

It will not arrive on Xbox One, either, with the game built for next-gen platforms only.

Is Avowed on Xbox Game Pass?

Yes, Avowed will launch on Xbox Game Pass.

While the game will still be released physically and digitally, Xbox Game Pass subscribers can play Avowed the second it launches for as little as £6.99 a month.

Can I pre-order Avowed?

Avowed is available to pre-order at GAME for £69.99.

It doesn't appear that many other retailers have pre-order pages live as of yet. Once the release date is fully finalised, we expect listings to go up shortly afterwards.

Of course, if you have Xbox Game Pass, you won't need to pre-order.

Avowed story news

Set in the Living Lands, a part of the world of Eora, Avowed sees players take control of an envoy of Aedyr as they are sent to investigate a mysterious plague that is being spread.

The Living Lands is full of dangers, with the aim being to save the island and your soul before these threats tear the place apart.

Avowed takes place in the same universe as Pillars of Eternity (also from Obsidian). Whether these two games will cross over in some way is yet to be seen. We imagine an Easter egg or two at the very least.

Avowed gameplay news

Avowed is an action fantasy role-playing game that looks to take inspiration from The Elder Scrolls.

A "flexible combat system" was developed specifically for Avowed, which allows players to quickly swap from spellcasting and sharpshooting to melee combat.

Customisable loadouts such as sword and shield, dual wield pistols and dual wield wands were some of the examples shown off.

All battles can be combined with different weapons, attacks and abilities for tactical advantages, with a wide variety of enemies said to feature.

"It's colourful, it's vibrant, it's strange. It's one of the most incredible settings in the world of Eora," said Obsidian game director Carrie Patel, as part of the Xbox Developer Direct in January 2024.

"When it comes to encounters, our combat brings the best of the moment-to-moment fun that comes with action-oriented gameplay and the depth and breadth of choice that you get with an RPG."

Avowed trailers

The first Avowed trailer was unveiled at the Xbox Games Showcase in July 2020, providing a first look at the world of Eora and a brief look at the first-person gameplay perspective. Watch below:

It would then be another three years before the first Avowed gameplay trailer was released, with the Xbox Game Showcase in June 2023 being the destination for its reveal. Much more footage was shown off, including combat, characters and the various lands that can be visited. Check it out:

Avowed then featured in Xbox's Developer Direct in January 2024. Here, the Obsidian development team explained their vision, as well as what fans can expect from the game. We also got confirmation of a 2024 release date. See the full video below:

Avowed will be released in 2024 across Xbox Series X/S and PC.
